Advent Week 3

In the family devotional this week...

The main passage you'll be in this week with your family is Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:1-7. No, you don't have to stay here but it is intentional in placing us in the narrative of the Christmas story. Below are some additional questions and passages to go deeper as you spend devotional time with your family.

Day 18

  • Read Luke 2:13-14 as a family.
  • What does it mean to give God glory? Does it happen just on Sunday morning? What would it look like to give God glory today?
  • Sing with your family! Click the video below for a version of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Born is the King."

Day 19

  • Read Luke 2:15-20 as a family.
  • Luke writes that as the shepherds told them of what had taken place all who heard it wondered.
  • What does it mean to be in wonder of something? (to be filled with awe).
  • How many times today did you say the word "awesome?" What was it towards?
  • What is awesome about the Christmas story? Can you name 1-2 things that makes you wonder?
  • Sing some more!

Day 20

  •  Read Luke 2:21-40 as a family.
  • How was Simeon described? What was said of him? (Look at Luke 2:25 - He was holy, righteous, devout, waiting, and the Holy Spirit was upon him)
  • What was Simeon waiting for? How did he know about this Messiah? (good spot here to cover some of the OT prophecies that spoke of Christ's first coming - Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2)
  • Let your family follow in Simeon's adoration by singing this song together:

Day 21

  • Read Matthew 2:1-2 as a family.
  • God used a unique star to bring wise men from the East. These wise men must have been doing some serious research and observing the night often.
  • Why do you think the star is important?
  • The bible says in Psalm 19:1 that "the heavens declare the glory of God." What in nature reminds you of the creativity and power of our Creator?
  • Sing together!

Day 22

  • Read Matthew 2:1-12.
  • The bible doesn't really tell us there were only three wise men but that there were three gifts. Regardless, they made a long journey to worship Jesus. Do you think you would have been that dedicated to see Jesus?
  • It is said of these wise men that they were from the east. This means that they were not from Israel. Why do you think God would include them in witnessing the King of the world born? Who may we include into the Christmas story?
  • Sing together!

Day 23

  • Read Matthew 2:1-12 as a family.
  • These wise men brought Jesus precious gifts. What gift would you give to Jesus? It doesn't have to be material. What about obedience to your parents? Giving a gift to someone in need? Letting your brother or sister play with your toys? Sharing the Christmas story with someone at school?
  • What can we be praying about as a family?
  • Sing together!
