Cain and Abel: Genesis 4:1-16

Our actions reveal the true motivation of our hearts

Right after the Fall we already begin to see humanity heading downhill real quick. This past Sunday our kids read the tragic story of Cain and Abel. We learned true worship puts God first, unrepentant sin will be destruction, and God's grace extends even to the disobedient.

Where is Jesus?

Abel was the first man ever to be killed. Jesus was the most important man ever to be killed. They were killed for the same basic reason - because they were favored by God, and others not favored by God hated them for it. So in some ways the deaths of Abel and Jesus are very similar. BUT Abel's blood could not bring forgiveness of sin. Only the shed blood of Jesus, both God and man, could do that. This is why "the sprinkled blood [of Jesus] speaks a better word than the blood of Abel" (Heb. 12:24). The sacrifice of Jesus was perfect.

In the home

We are on week 4 in the Long Story Short family devotional for this week (starting on page 27). DAY ONE goes along great with the sermon we just heard on Sunday about being good stewards of what God has given us. We serve a generous God who in turn calls us to be generous. Both Cain and Abel were provided for yet one sacrifice pleased the Lord. What's the difference between the two gifts? One came from a heart of gratitude and the other for himself. Cain's anger, rather than sorrow, reveals he was more concerned with his own glory than God's. How we give is most important, God cares more about the heart.

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. (Psalm 51:16-17)
