Jacob's Wrestling Match - Genesis 32:1-32

God protects, disciples, and blesses his chosen ones.

Yesterday morning our kiddos learned:
    1.    Jacob is reminded of God's faithfulness
    2.    Jacob fears man more than God
    3.    Jacob wrestles with God and learns the fear of the Lord

Where is Jesus?

Read John 12:13.

This mysterious man who appears in the night puts Jacob's hip out of joint with one small touch. This couldn't of been any normal man. Suddenly, Jacob realizes he had been wrestling with God. Despite the pain, Jacob helped on and refused to let go until God blessed him. So God blessed Jacob and gave him a very special name: Israel. From that time on, God's people would be known as the people of Israel. When Jesus came riding into Jerusalem just before going to the cross, the crowds waved palm branches and shouted, "Blessed is...the King of Israel."

In the home

We are on week 21 in the Long Story Short family devotional (starting on page 137). Read the story yourself (Genesis 32:1-32) and retell it to your kids. I would focus on days 1-3 in the devotional. I'd encourage you as you read to be thinking of your own questions to ask your family to tailor this time to where they are.

5 Practical Questions to engage your child's heart

Check out the video above to hear from Paul Tripp on how you can address what is most important in the heat of the moment by asking these 5 simple questions. You don't have to repeat these questions verbatim, but the order in which you ask them is very important.

  1. What was going on?
  2. What were you thinking and feeling as it was happening?
  3. What did you do in response?
  4. Why did you do it? What were you seeking to accomplish?
  5. What was the result?
